Many of them draw on ideas employed in the earlier part of the book. The essays are not only studies of buildings, but are also explorative analyses of less familiar examples of modern architecture, teasing out from the physical place, the creative intent (be it philosophical, psychological or artistic) of the architect, and the deep layers of character and meaning in the buildings.
