A modern English translation of selections from this book by Coleman Barks and John Moyne is titled, The Drowned Book. Given the times, it was expected that a person on any long journey through the heartland of Islam would make visits to the greatest cit­ ies. Accordingly, the itinerant family of Baha’uddin enjoyed sojourns in the fabled cities of Baghdad and eastern Syria. From there the family finally made their pilgrimage to Mecca. Then, after completing the holy rituals, they started on a long, meandering journey northward back through Syria until they finally reached Anatolia (the Asian side of present-day Turkey), the domain of the Seljuk tribe of Turks whose kingdom consisted of land recently seized from the Byzantine Romans.

16 Part 1: Meet the Master Composition of the Divan After the final disappearance of Shamsuddin, Rumi was consumed by an extended period of soul-searching. He continued to compose poems and odes to assuage his wounded heart, and this ever-growing body of work formed the basis of his book, Divan, which he dedicated to the memory of Shamsuddin of Tabriz.
