As the Greek and Shakespearean tragedies have taught us, the hubris of humanity comes from our not recognizing the full consequences of our actions and decisions. We have designed a food system, for example, that produces an abundance of calories at a relatively low cost, without seeing how we will all pay dearly for it as the tsunami of illness from an increasingly overweight population hits our health system in the years ahead.
The design disciplines have long been accustomed to judging the value of what we do in terms of its consequences: Does a building or object function well, have strength and durability, and appeal to us aesthetically and intellectually? But rarely do we look at the consequences of what we do in terms of the inferences we make and the process we conduct. What difference does it make, in others words, to work from a hunch, seek out an omen, look for a symptom, apply a metaphor, draw an analogy, respond to a clue, make a diagnosis, envision a scenario, or offer an explanation?
How could we ever make a case for design that would attract even close to the same kind of resources that our research colleagues in other disciplines have garnered? But given Peirce’s idea of abduction, we don’t have to; indeed, doing so would only show that we don’t understand the nature of the research that is ours to do. Abductive research—research into the inferences we make and the consequences of our making them— does not demand a lot of money, or even a great deal of time; it mainly requires a change in perception about ourselves and the work that we do.
