This booklet examines user-initiated adjustments to government-built housing in Bangladesh, Egypt, Ghana and Zimbabwe, surveyed in a study application backed via the united kingdom division for foreign improvement. The 1600 dwellings surveyed convey how rather low-income families are able to offering new rooms and companies either to enhance their very own housing stipulations and to provide condo rooms or lodging for kinfolk residing rent-free. the recent development is usually of at the least pretty much as good caliber because the unique constructions and someday envelopes the unique in a brand new pores and skin. it really is transparent that transformation provides lodging and companies to latest housing, enhancements the housing inventory, and creates sort out of uniformity.

The research ends up in coverage feedback to inspire alterations for the renewal of presidency housing. those comprise the supply of mortgage finance; the encouragement of co-operation among acquaintances, specially in multi-storey housing; and the deliberate colonization of open area subsequent to the dwellings the place plots will not be supplied. for brand spanking new housing, it's transparent that designs for brand new components are just the start of an on-going improvement technique instead of a blueprint for once-for-all development.

These two notions cannot be separated, but together comprise the notion of man housing himself; dwelling is building. (Habraken, 1975: 18) Thus, the acts of alteration and extension to mass housing environments would appear to be as inevitable as that night follows day: MORE THAN JUST A DWELLING 41 It has to do… with the sudden urge to change as well as the stubborn desire to conserve and keep. It is related to the need to create one’s own environment, but also to share that of others or to follow a fashion.

This analysis demonstrates that transformers are responding at least partly to the inadequacies of the original dwellings for the main households. The comparatively large original dwellings in Zimbabwe are the exception as the main households seem to have provided themselves with little extra space through the transformations process. Elsewhere, main households would have had only two-thirds to threequarters as much habitable space as they have now. As the main household represents those who would occupy the dwelling even if it had not been transformed, it seems that at least some of the impetus to extend has probably come from the inadequacy of the original.
