Case Study: Electronic Ink One interesting technology that has passed through the whole curve is electronic paper, also known as electronic ink or e-ink. I first saw a demonstration of this exciting technology in 1997 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab, but at that point it had already been around in various forms for almost a decade. Electronic ink technologies promised to provide a new form of display that is closer to that of ordinary paper than it is to traditional 5 4 G R O U N D E D I N N O VAT I O N : S T R AT E G I E S F O R C R E AT I N G D I G I TA L P R O D U C T S computer screens.

The final designs were the result of a tight interplay between the interactions described in the personas and the technology we had to work with. The first scenario, with Nadim and his hobby agents, resulted in a system we called GlowBots. Inspired by the idea of agents that could “breed” to somehow create new patterns, we imagined a collection of small autonomous robots that could change appearance by means of a colorful display. When the robots were placed next to each other, each one would be inspired by the pattern shown on its neighbors and create a new pattern that was a mix of the existing ones.

Meanwhile, the original e-ink technology is constantly being developed and will certainly turn up in many other products beyond book readers. Ultimately, both user-oriented and technology-oriented inquiry can be considered raw materials for innovation. By relying on this material in creative ways, we can fashion new inventions that have a better chance to be grounded and turn into actual innovations. However, it is important to not be stuck by the results of the inquiry—that will never let us lift our gaze from the obvious solutions and create unique new ideas.
