The literary critic’s task is to make a kind of strategic retreat from society in order to form an academic discipline which will eventually achieve an interdisciplinary synthesis and a transformation of society. Aiming to steer a middle course between paralysed nostalgia and capitulation to the forces of modernization, Leavis proposes a rearguard action by consolidating the ‘special’ discipline of English. His model for English remained the dominant one within the discipline until the last few decades: its interdisciplinarity was inspired by its broader project of cultural renewal, but this was accompanied by an insistence that the study of English should involve a scrupulously ‘neutral’ textual reading, the skills for which could only be acquired within the discipline.

Leavis’s ‘Sketch for an English School’, written in 1940 and aimed at redesigning the Cambridge English course, reflected this overall view in its proposal that English students should study a foreign language, comparative literature and political, economic, social and intellectual history alongside the established literary canon (Leavis 1948: 54). In the name of greater interdisciplinarity, Leavis’s hypothetical English degree also included a special subject – the seventeenth century – in which the relationship between literature and society could be studied in more depth.

These changes have been mirrored internationally, in countries such as the United States, Australia and Canada. The increasing diversity of the student and lecturing body has thrown into question the value-laden assumptions about literature on which the discipline of literary studies has traditionally been based. This climate of intellectual uncertainty has been echoed across the humanities and social science disciplines, as notions of scientific objectivity and disciplinary coherence have been seen to rest on exclusions that sit uneasily within an increasingly pluralist university.
