Early stages may test prototypes of varying degrees of fidelity with the goal of exploring design alternatives. When testing prototypes there often are bugs to work around, or if the prototype is static, the moderator needs to explain what would have happened if it were interactive. In contrast, later diagnostic tests have less moderator intervention to make the product work or to explain what might happen. Paper prototyping is a special case. With paper prototypes, the moderator is much more active in asking questions and sometimes draws the developers into the conversation with the participant.
