For offshore and similar applications needing weld metals of the highest toughness, seamless wires have yet to make their mark. The largest single item of cost in manufacturing most flux-cored wires is the steel for the sheath, which is normally bought in strip form.

Deposition rate data can be helpful in choosing between different welding processes or between different classes of consumable: for example, in suggesting the use of a rutile rather than a basic wire or gas-shielded rather than gasless. However, because of the other factors affecting productivity, such as weld cleaning time, repair time, frequency of tip changes and so on, the small differences which can be measured between consumables of the same class rarely emerge as significant in the final equation.

The resulting product is hence very stiff, which gives it good feeding properties. The disadvantage of the system is that wires with a bulky filling, such as self-shielded types, cannot be made in very small diameters.
