The study gathered information from the women about a number of topics, including any personal history of sexual assault or alcohol and drug use. Follow-up interviews were conducted one and two years later. The study identified a group of women who had no history of alcoholism and who were assaulted within the two-year follow-up period. Of this group, approximately 9 percent developed alcohol dependence. The study also found that women who initially reported alcohol dependence were more likely to be assaulted over the following two years than were women who abstained from alcohol and drugs.
In some instances the victim may be asked to view a photo line-up rather than a "live" one. A victim's inability to identify her attacker, either as a result of the trauma or because of the circumstances of the attack, does not automatically mean that the suspect will not be prosecuted. Other types of evidence will be considered in making that determination. Once the general facts of the attack have been established and a suspect has been sufficiently identified, the case is presented to the District Attorney's Office for consideration.
Because of the stigma that has long been attached to rape (see chapter 3), many advocates and counselors who work with victims prefer the term sexual assault, feeling that term to be both more technically accurate and less traumatic for the victim. In fact, many advocates and counselors refer to their clients as rape or sexual assault "survivors," rather than "victims," as a means of stressing the recovery process over the victimization. The terms used in this book have been chosen carefully, with an attempt to balance technical accuracy with emotional impact and reality.
